March 2008 - Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month, and the Women’s History Project (WHP) of the Southwest Harbor Public Library will continue the tradition of presenting exhibits and programs that especially highlight the accomplishments of women. This year’s theme is “Women & The Sea”. The month-long series of events will include an art show, panel discussions, a film viewing , and an ongoing oral history project.

“Women Artists of MDI’s Westside”

The art show will be on display throughout the library, showing the work of over forty women. A wide variety of media will be represented, including photography, painting, needlecrafts, sculpture, collage, pottery, and jewelry. The work will incorporate the theme "Women & the Sea".

All events are free and will be on following Thursdays:

Several other shows followed the Apron Show, among them a Glove Show – full of gloves women wear for everything from lobstering to dancing to making snowballs – and the No Idle Hands show.

If you would like to see more of the No Idle Hands Show, click on PICTURES button in the button bank on the left.

The Women's History Project, as the group came to be known, put together blue albums, which you can see at the Library, showing writing and pictures done for the various shows. They started a database of authors and subjects and gathered the pictures of each show together in a repeating slide show that is often on view at the Library.

In 2006, the Women's History Project sponsored a very popular series of seminars at the Library about women in business, science, crafts etc. with a panel of women from the community leading each discussion by the fire in the Holmes Reading Room.

We are always looking for creative, enthusiastic women to help us plan for the annual WHP celebration.

Come and investigate this exciting project. We need you and we promise that you will find it interesting!
