Friends of the Library Tea

The Friends of the Southwest Harbor Public Library is a volunteer, non-profit organization whose purpose is to assist the trustees and staff of the Library.

Through membership fees and fundraisers, they raise money to purchase items not covered in the Library’s operating budget.

FUND RAISERS

Plant Sale

On the Saturday before Memorial Day, the Main Street lawn of the Library is full of brightly colored plants. The Friends run the annual Plant Sale. There are perennial and annual flowers and vegetables, hanging baskets and shrubs available. A local nursery, Islandscaping, purchases most of the plants for us. Members and friends give several plants to us.

Quilt Raffle

A quilt raffle has been held for several years. Pat Sweeney continues to put her considerable talents to work in sewing a quilt for us. The quilt is unveiled at the April Tea and is on display at the Library until the winning ticket is drawn at the October Tea. Tickets are available at the Circulation Desk. The price is $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.

FOR FUN

Tea By The Fireplace

The Friends encourage patronage of the Library through Teas, which are offered at no charge and are open to the public. The Teas are held in the Holmes Room on the third Thursday of the month from October through April, 1:30 - 3:30pm. These Teas draw patrons of all ages from young children to older residents. The Friends serve cookies and tea, using teacups donated by Library patrons. New acquisitions of the Library are displayed. Sometimes there is musical entertainment and there are always people to meet.

Through their fund raising, the Friends of the Library are able to provide many items not covered by the Library’s operating budget. The list includes such things as: children’s programs, flat screen computers, a repeater, new Library cards, plants for the Main Street wall, storytellers for both children and adults, a printer, newspaper subscriptions and much more.

The Friends of the Southwest Harbor Public Library is a member of the Friends of Maine Libraries. We have sent representatives to the Annual Fall Conference where we exchange ideas with other members, attend workshops and hear what’s new in the world of libraries.
